2012 and Opps Training is now ten years old! Through the thick and thin of economic up and down turn, Opps has been successful in supporting people in gaining new and marketable skills whilst helping employers achieve their strategic objectives.

Over those ten years Opps has never faltered from its driving force: Developing opportunities for those who may not have been able to succeed in the past.

Our portfolio embraces the Health and Social Sciences through its Affordable Housing and Health and Social Care programmes. We also provides training on the essential components to run a successful business: Management; Business Administration and Customer Service.

Because Equality and Diversity plus Safeguarding Data are so important to our own sector of Education, Opps has developed two accredited programmes covering these essential topics, which we are able to share to organisations across all sectors.

Having just moved into newer and bigger premises I can testify to the strength of our team. There is nothing like a re-location to focus the mind and the fact that we are all still smiling at one another provides evidence of our willingness to ‘pull together’.

Looking to the next 10 years, we will continue to provide a first class service, delivering free training through government initiatives whilst retaining our core bespoke training. Our portfolio will always be informed by our customers and may take us to curriculum areas as yet unidentified. Opps has lots to celebrate whilst we look back over our successful 10 years and lots to remain optimistic over when looking to the next 10 years.

When my peer group and I were asked for a volunteer to write a short blog for the Opps website, as usual I spoke before thinking! As a ‘newbie’ to the company, and still getting my head around how the Health and Social Care apprenticeships work, I really should have hid behind my notepad!

But, here I am, with what I hope to be an interesting, and hopefully inspirational thought on the apprenticeship learning journey.

To be able to make a positive contribution to individuals needing care and support is invaluable; gaining an apprenticeship can be the beginning of your professional journey, enabling you to climb the ladder within your role, or diversify to find your ‘niche’.

Be creative in your role; use your apprenticeship as a platform for improving standards in your workplace every day. Question and reflect upon your daily practice – ‘that was ok, but what could I do better next time?’ Put yourself into the shoes of the person you are providing care for – is it good enough – if it isn’t, how can I change it.

‘If you have the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed’ (David Viscott)

Opps Training has been delivering vocational training for 10 years. I think we could claim to have met the full spectrum of employers during that time.

We have increasing numbers of real star employers who have been working in partnership with Opps Training for years. These champions of vocational training are, unsurprisingly, leading in highly successful organisations which understand the value of effective training. Providing inspiration and content for the training we deliver, they support their employees with mentors, effective management, review of learners progress and a comprehensive training and development plan. No wonder that these employers are riding out the storm of the recession.

As Opps Training moves into its second year of delivering apprenticeships in Health and Social Care; Affordable Housing and Business and Management, we rejoice in the successes we have seen. These successes are not only those enjoyed by our client organisations but the wonderful apprentices we have supported. The apprentices, whether existing members of staff or those newly recruited to the sector are stars in their own right. Undertaking level 2 or 3 qualifications whilst at work can be daunting but with the support of their employers, they have been rising to the challenge and are now reaping the benefits.

Recently at Opps, we received a quality assurance visit from EDI for Health and Social Care from which we are proud to announce that we received a glowing report.

This tri-annual visit is just one aspect of the quality assurance procedures within Opps, making sure that our qualifications are delivered to the correct standard. They are important examinations of our assessment and internal verification practice, where we constantly strive for excellence.

Some comments we received in the EDI report included:

“The staff are experienced and fully aware of the assessment strategy requirements”

“The standardisation of documentation and auditing is consistent across the team and is a key strength of the centre”

“A positive visit with no actions raised”

“An excellent display of assessment”

The EDI report is outstandingly good news for Opps as we continue to develop and improve as a company and to deliver high quality qualifications.

Opps are proud to announce that we have signed up to a new recycling scheme which will enable us to dispose of our waste in an environmentally friendly way.

This fantastic development means all of our paper, cardboard and plastic will be recycled in a monthly office collection. Each desk will have recycle trays and the office will have 3 main recycle bins – so now there won’t be any excuses not to recycle!

This is a positive step forward for our company, as we strive to be as efficient and green as possible to ensure that we are doing the most for our community and the environment.
