Apprenticeships
Used properly, an apprenticeship provides a complete and well-rounded training program with many benefits for employers and employees alike.
When recruiting, being able to include an apprenticeship as part of the package can make a position very attractive to prospective applicants, allowing you to interview the best talent and save on recruitment costs. Where existing employees undertake an apprenticeship, studies have shown
that motivation and productivity are increased along with employee retention rate, on top of all the other benefits that having a well trained employee brings.
An apprenticeship is a tool used by organisations that considers the long term as well as the short.
They can effectively solve issues of progression, with an employee ‘home grown’ through an
apprenticeship providing the material for future managers and leaders, rather than hiring expensive
managers from outside. Furthermore, skills shortages are prevented before they occur, maintaining
the competitiveness of your business.
Perhaps best of all is that the training is paid for by the government. The apprentice’s wages are
still met by the organisation and there is a level of commitment required in allowing the apprentice
to attend training workshops once a fortnight, however this is far outweighed by savings made on
training costs and the hiring of more qualified staff.
